Crate labels were among the most colorful advertisements of the early twentieth century, and this picture shows peaches packed in wooden crates, the fruit stacked so the best examples face outward. Growers and shippers pasted printed labels on crate ends to win buyers in distant city markets, where a bright, appealing label could set one orchard's fruit apart from the next. Color photographs of produce like this were valued because they captured the saturated hues the labels themselves were designed to show off. Look closely at the peach skins, which range from pale blush to deep red-gold.
