Peach crates are the focus here, stacked high on a horse-drawn wagon with the farmer seated at the reins. Wagons like this were a common sight at the turn of the twentieth century, when orchards in many parts of the country shipped fresh fruit by rail to city markets, and crates of this kind helped keep soft peaches from bruising on the way. Fruit-crate labels of the period, which this gallery board collects, often carried bright color lithography meant to sell the produce to buyers far from the orchard. The picture is a reminder of how much hand labor and animal power stood behind that trade.
