Crates of oranges spill along a packing line here, the fruit rolling toward workers who sort and pack it by hand. Citrus packing houses of this kind were central to the California and Florida growing trades in the early and middle 20th century, when fruit moved from groves to rail cars and grocery shelves in large volumes. Pictures like this one document how the sorting, grading and boxing were organized, and the crate labels that were printed for these shipments became a visual record of the industry in their own right.
