The man pictured is identified in the caption as Gauvreau of the Dominion Police, a Canadian force that became part of the hunt for Hawley Harvey Crippen, the London doctor accused of murdering his wife. Crippen and his companion, Ethel Le Neve, had sailed for Canada in July 1910, and wireless messages let officers reach the liner Laurentic before it docked at Quebec. The Canadian officers' role in boarding the ship and taking Crippen into custody made the case a sensation on both sides of the Atlantic. Bain News Service, a Manhattan agency that sold news photographs, circulated images like this one to newspapers quickly. The date given with the negative is also uncertain, so the exact day of the photograph should be checked against other sources.
