The record gives this glass negative the name Mattie Baldwin, but that title comes from caption cards and data supplied by the Bain News Service and has not been independently verified. George Grantham Bain founded the New York news photography agency around 1899, and its files hold tens of thousands of images of people and events from the early twentieth century. Glass negatives of this small size were a common format for press and commercial work before flexible film became standard, so the plate itself shows how photographers worked in that period. Researchers should treat the name as a starting point rather than a confirmed identity.
