Shaggy red-coated Highland cattle, with their long horns and heavy fringe, are the animals that set this scene apart: a bull and his calf standing on a Scottish-style hillside rather than a working farmyard. Highland cattle were bred in the rugged northwest of Scotland, where they grazed open hill country in harsh weather, and their thick double coats let them thrive where other breeds struggled. Artists of the 19th and early 20th centuries, including Sir Edwin Landseer and Highland painters, made these animals a favorite subject, valued both for their picturesque appearance and as emblems of the Highlands. Look closely at how the calf stays close to its mother, a detail that gives the picture its quiet domestic warmth.
