The Old Barn Floor takes its name from the worn planks at the center of the barn, where threshing, sorting grain and moving loads of hay all once took place. Barns like this one were the working core of a farm, sheltering animals and equipment while giving the family a dry, covered space to work through the seasons. Floors of this kind were usually laid from heavy, hand-sawn or mill-cut boards, and over decades of foot traffic and wagon wheels they took on the smooth, weathered look seen here. Farm buildings such as this one are a useful record of how rural work was organized before mechanized equipment changed daily routines.
