The title, *The Champions of the Barn*, suggests a contest or prize among the animals or livestock of a farm, though the record does not describe the scene in detail. The print is a hand-colored lithograph issued in 1876, the centennial year, by the New York firm Currier & Ives. The firm sold inexpensive lithographs of rural and domestic life to a broad middle-class audience, and barns and farmyards were among its most popular subjects. Each copy was colored by hand, often in assembly-line fashion, so no two impressions were exactly alike. The print is catalogued as number 1073 in Gale Research's *Currier & Ives: A catalog Raisonné*.
