San Francisco in 1847 was a small town of adobes and rough wooden houses along the cove at the northern edge of the peninsula, still growing into its new American name. Its plaza, renamed Portsmouth Square after the sloop Portsmouth, served as the center of town life. That year Sam Brannan began printing The California Star, the first newspaper in the town, and its columns reported ship arrivals, land sales, and the slow trickle of new settlers. Ships waited in the bay for cargo, while the old Mission Dolores stood on the edge of town as a reminder of the Spanish past. Within a year, gold found at Sutter's Mill in the Sierra foothills would send these streets into a frenzy few residents had expected.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of San Francisco, California, drawn in 1847. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
