San Francisco in 1855 was a raw, fast-growing port city that had swelled from a few hundred residents in 1848 to roughly 50,000 within about seven years, driven by the Gold Rush. Its economy rested on shipping, merchants supplying the mining camps, and a waterfront crowded with vessels, many of them abandoned by crews who had headed to the diggings. The city was still rebuilding after large fires in 1849 and 1851, and it was governed amid fierce factional politics, including the Vigilance Committee's actions in 1856 that were only then taking shape. Charles Méryon's bird's-eye view, drawn from a high vantage, shows the dense grid of streets climbing the hills toward the bay, a landscape residents would have recognized as the gateway to California's gold fields.
