In 1862, San Francisco was a city of more than 50,000 people, the commercial center of the Pacific coast and the main port for silver and gold moving out of the Comstock Lode in Nevada. Money from the mines passed through the brokers and banks along Montgomery Street, while ships unloaded goods at the wharves on the eastern waterfront. The Civil War divided many residents, though California stayed in the Union, and the city's Union-leaning newspapers and political clubs argued over the war through the year. Its streets rose steeply over the hills, with Telegraph Hill and the Russian Hill slopes crowded with houses, and Chinese, Irish, German, and Mexican-born residents lived alongside the older American families. The bird's-eye view captures a city that had already left its gold rush roughness behind and was settling into a permanent, prosperous commercial life.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of San Francisco, California, drawn in 1862. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
