Large cooking vessels called fat boilers set this scene apart, with British women shown tending them near the front, most likely during the First World War. The George Grantham Bain Collection came from the Bain News Service, a New York press agency that sold news photographs to newspapers, and its negatives from the 1910s often show women taking on work that men had done before the war. British women's auxiliary units in France ran field kitchens and canteens that fed troops, so the boilers likely point to that kind of labor. The record gives no firm date or location, so the exact setting remains unconfirmed.
