Women who drove ambulances for the British war effort during the First World War are the focus of this glass negative, which the Bain News Service titled with a caption that the Library of Congress notes has not been independently verified. Driving military vehicles was unusual work for women at the time, and many of those who took it on were volunteers from middle- and upper-class families who had trained as drivers and mechanics. The Bain News Service, a New York agency, circulated pictures like this to newspapers, so the image reflects how wartime service by women reached American readers.
