Mountain Lake Park, in Garrett County in western Maryland, was a summer resort in 1906, shaped by the cool air of the Allegheny Plateau and by the railroad that carried visitors up from Baltimore and Washington. The Mountain Lake Park Association had founded the community in the early 1880s as a Chautauqua-style assembly, offering lectures, religious services, music, and recreation around a small lake. Families spent their summers in cottages and boarding houses, while the wider county relied on timber, farming, and coal that moved along the same rail lines. By the early 1900s the resort drew church groups, vacationers, and seasonal residents who came for the season rather than to settle. Its appeal rested on that rail connection, which made a mountain retreat reachable from the cities.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Mountain Lake Park, Maryland, drawn in 1906. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
