Frostburg, Maryland, in 1905 was a coal town in the high country of Allegany County, where mines in the Georges Creek basin supplied the rail lines that carried fuel east toward Baltimore and beyond. Miners and their families lived in company-built rows and in the older town streets climbing the ridge, and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad's tracks and yards shaped how the community was laid out. The state normal school that had opened there a few years earlier gave the town a second identity as a center for training teachers, a role that set it apart from its mining neighbors. Residents of the period would have known Frostburg as a place of hard shift work, church and lodge life, and the steady noise of the trains, a town still tied closely to the fortunes of coal.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Frostburg, Maryland, drawn in 1905. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
