A socialist handing out pamphlets in Union Square is what sets this glass negative apart, and its date, May 1, 1908, places it on International Workers' Day. Union Square had long been a gathering place for labor and socialist groups, and May Day was a traditional occasion for rallies and speeches there. The George Grantham Bain News Service recorded many New York street scenes in the early 1900s, so the picture shows how political literature changed hands on a busy city street. The title comes from the Bain caption data, which has not been independently verified.
