Uncle Sam appears with a coal shovel, and the printed text turns the image into a lesson in boiler firing: fire small amounts often, keep the fuel bed about six inches thick, and watch for air leaks in the brickwork. Issued under the United States Fuel Administration in 1917, the poster reflects the wartime push to stretch coal supplies, when saving fuel was presented as a patriotic duty as well as an economic one. Its six numbered directions show how much of that effort depended on ordinary boiler tenders and building operators doing small tasks carefully.
