Distanced!!" is a racing term for a competitor beaten so thoroughly that they fall out of contention, and the double exclamation points suggest the joke is in the defeat itself. The lithograph was issued in New York in 1878 by Currier & Ives, a firm that produced inexpensive color prints on sporting, comic, and everyday subjects for a broad middle-class market. Its sporting humor reflects the late 1870s, when horse racing drew large crowds and the firm's comic sheets were a familiar sight in homes and shop windows.
