Vaughn Shoemaker's cartoon, "Hanging by threads," appeared in the *Chicago Daily News* on December 29, 1937, and takes as its subject the sinking of the U.S. gunboat *Panay* on the Yangtze River on December 12. Japanese aircraft attacked the vessel, which had been escorting American diplomats and oil company employees out of the Chinese interior, and the attack killed several people. Tokyo's formal apology and its pledge that Japan would not further harm Americans in China were widely doubted at the time, and the title suggests how fragile Shoemaker thought those assurances were. The drawing is in the Caroline and Erwin Swann collection of caricature and cartoon at the Library of Congress.
