Few magazine advertisements from 1918 are as recognizable today as this one for Campbell's Vegetable Soup, which ran in the Literary Digest that February. The Literary Digest was one of the most widely read weekly news magazines in the country, so a full-page ad there reached a broad middle-class audience. Campbell's had by then built its reputation on condensed canned soups, sold as a convenient, economical meal, and its advertising leaned heavily on the red-and-white label and wholesome home cooking. Notice how the ad packs its pitch into bold type and a clear picture of the product, a style that shaped food marketing for decades afterward.
