Its title, "Facing the Enemy," sets it apart from the usual bottles and glasses on this board: it casts drink itself as an adversary to be confronted. Images like this were common in the temperance campaigns of the late 1800s and early 1900s, when reformers in the United States and Britain used posters, cartoons and illustrated tracts to portray alcohol as a threat to families, workers and public order. The approach borrowed the language of war to rally support for abstinence and, in the United States, for national Prohibition, which took effect in 1920. Looking closely at the figures and symbols will show how the artist framed the struggle between sobriety and drink.
