Alfred Iverson, a Georgia-born lawyer who rose to brigadier general in the Confederate army, is the subject of this portrait, one of many officer studies in the Library of Congress's Civil War holdings. His brigade, made up largely of North Carolina regiments, suffered heavy losses on the first day of fighting at Gettysburg in July 1863, a defeat that shaped how his service was remembered. The caption card gives his life dates but no date for the photograph, so its timing can only be estimated from his military career.
