Sophie Braslau, the American contralto, is the subject of this glass negative, one of the Bain News Service portraits of performers working in New York in the early twentieth century. Braslau was known for her rich low voice, which carried her through opera, concert stages and recordings. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, produced thousands of such negatives to supply newspapers and magazines with images of public figures. The record gives no date, and its title comes from the agency's own caption cards, so the exact occasion is unknown.
