The title on this glass negative is only a name, "A. Reiss," and the Library of Congress notes that it comes from unverified data written on the negative or its caption card, so the identity of the sitter and the occasion are not confirmed. The plate is a 5 x 7 inch or smaller glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection. Bain News Service, the New York agency Bain founded around 1899, sold news photographs to newspapers, and its glass negatives record the people and events that made the news in the early twentieth century. Without a firm date or caption, the picture is best read as one example of that commercial press work.
