The truck in this glass negative is an Autocar, identified in the title with W.A. Smoot & Co., and the plate dates from about 1919 or 1920. Autocar was a gasoline-truck maker based in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, and by the end of the First World War motor trucks like this one were beginning to replace horse-drawn wagons for city deliveries. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio, made this negative. Look for the streaks and blemishes across the glass, which come from the natural deterioration of the original coatings.
