Published in *Harper's New Monthly Magazine* in 1872 and 1873, this wood engraving shows a family gathered around a Christmas tree, a scene many of the magazine's readers would have recognized from their own parlors. By the early 1870s the decorated evergreen had become a common feature of American middle-class homes, a custom spread in part by German immigrants and by illustrated periodicals. Wood engravings of this period were cut into blocks of boxwood, which allowed fine detail in small domestic scenes and made it possible to reproduce them alongside the magazine's text.
