Printed in Philadelphia in 1845 by E. Ferrett & Co., this woodcut illustrates the title page of *Kriss Kringle's Christmas Tree*. The name Kriss Kringle comes from the German *Christkindl*, or Christ child, and American writers of the 1840s used it for the gift-bringing visitor who would later be called Santa Claus. Clement Clarke Moore's 1823 poem had already shaped the image of a Christmas gift giver, and small books like this one helped carry that figure into American homes.
