The engraved title page for *Kriss Kringle's Christmas Tree* was made for a children's book, and the record credits the Philadelphia firm E. Ferrett & Co. with the 1845 imprint. The name Kriss Kringle comes from the German Christkindl, and in America it described a gift-bringing figure before "Santa Claus" became the standard name. By the 1840s the decorated evergreen was becoming a familiar holiday custom in the United States, and children's books of the period often carried such customs to young readers. Title pages like this one were often the most elaborate image in a small volume, so the design is worth a close look.
