International Women's Day posters from the 1970s and 1980s often placed a row of women of different ages, races and occupations side by side, and this one follows that pattern to make the point that the cause reached across every kind of life. The holiday, observed on March 8, grew out of early twentieth-century campaigns for women's suffrage, labor rights and an end to discrimination, and by the late 1970s the United Nations had begun promoting it worldwide. Posters like this one were printed in large numbers for union halls, community centers and classrooms, so they show how the movement was pitched to ordinary audiences. Look closely at the figures' clothing and poses to see how the artist signaled both solidarity and individual identity.
