Labeled simply "Ouimet - golf," this glass negative most likely shows Francis Ouimet, the Brookline amateur who stunned British golf in 1913 by winning the U.S. Open at The Country Club in Massachusetts. He beat Harry Vardon and Ted Ray in an 18-hole playoff, a result that made him a national sports hero and helped popularize the game in America. The negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the New York news photography service whose glass plates document sporting figures of the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, so the exact occasion remains unconfirmed.
