This glass negative records the gallery, the crowd of spectators who followed the play, at a golf match dated September 13, 1913. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers, made and distributed the picture, and the date and title come from its unverified notes. By 1913 golf was drawing large crowds in the United States, and photographers often turned their cameras toward the onlookers as well as the players. The picture is a useful record of how such events looked and who attended them.
