Francis Ouimet, the young American amateur who later became one of the sport's most celebrated players, is shown here mid-swing with a golf club, captured in a Bain News Service photograph taken sometime between 1908 and 1914. At that stage of his career he was still a teenager in the Boston area, where he caddied and played as an amateur before his 1913 upset victory at the U.S. Open, which made him a national figure. The Bain Collection holds news photographs from this period, and images like this one show how quickly golf was gaining popularity in the United States in the early 1900s.
