Few views of Niagara turn toward the mills rather than the falls, which makes this photochrom, Detroit Publishing Co. no. 51115, an unusual record of the river's working side. The American shore at Niagara Falls, New York, hosted a cluster of mills and factories that drew on the power of the Niagara River, and the color process gives the water and industrial buildings a soft, painted quality. Photochroms like this one were made in large numbers around 1900 and sold to travelers as souvenirs, so the mills appear alongside scenery that visitors would have expected to see.
