J. K. Emmet, the comedian pictured here, built his reputation on the character of Fritz, a good-natured German immigrant, and the Fritz plays were a staple of American stages in the 1870s and 1880s. This color lithograph was produced by the H. A. Thomas Lithographic Studio in New York and entered for copyright in 1882, so it was a commercial theater advertisement rather than an art print. The moon listed among its subjects is the detail that earns it a place on an astrology and magic board, though the poster's purpose was to sell tickets to Emmet's show.
