At Manzanar, a camp in California's Owens Valley, a ball game draws a crowd of spectators, and Ansel Adams made the picture in 1943 while documenting daily life behind the barbed wire. The camp held Japanese Americans from the West Coast after Executive Order 9066 in 1942, and baseball was one of the most popular ways residents kept up routines, built community and found a measure of normal life. Adams's caption, recorded on the back of the print, names the place and the event, so the image stands as a record of how people made recreation in a confined and difficult setting.
