A ring of bold stripes with a bright yellow edge sits on dark water, and at first it reads as pure abstraction until the circle suggests something round, perhaps a balloon envelope mirrored on the surface. Ballooning dates to the Montgolfier brothers' hot air flights in France in 1783, and from the start balloon envelopes were designed to be seen, with panels, bands and stripes that made them easy to pick out against the sky. Pictures like this invite viewers to work out where the shape comes from, and the reflection becomes part of the story.
