The record names the sitter only as Henry McBride, a label the Bain News Service wrote on its negatives or caption cards and that has not been independently verified. If it refers to the New York art critic of that name, who wrote for the *Sun* and championed modern painting, the portrait would fall in the early twentieth century, when Bain's photographers worked the city's streets and studios. The Bain News Service, founded by George Grantham Bain in 1899, produced news and portrait pictures for newspapers, and its glass negatives later came to the Library of Congress.
