Two angels hold up lilies beside a line of "Alleluia," the kind of cheerful greeting card that was once sent to mark Easter morning. The lily has long been the flower of the feast, its white trumpet shape taken to stand for resurrection and purity, and printed Easter cards of this sort became popular in the late 1800s as color lithography made small devotional images inexpensive. Such cards were usually exchanged among family and friends, tucked into letters or church programs. Notice how the angels are shown as gentle, almost playful figures, a sign of how the holiday's solemn message was softened for ordinary households.
