An angel and a lamb share the frame in this Easter greeting postcard, with lilies gathered at the bottom as a sign of renewal. Easter cards of this kind became popular in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when illustrated postcards were mailed in great numbers and holiday greetings were a common reason to write. The imagery draws on long-standing Christian symbols: the lamb recalls Christ as the sacrificial lamb, the lily stands for resurrection and purity, and the angel often points to the empty tomb. Look closely at the printed lettering and color, which show how such cards were produced for a mass market.
