Lee Chapel is the building at the center of this view of the Washington and Lee University campus in Lexington, Virginia, shown here in summer foliage from across the grounds. The chapel was completed in the late 1860s while Robert E. Lee was president of the college, which was then called Washington College. Lee died in 1870, and he is buried in a crypt beneath the chapel, a fact that has made the building a place of pilgrimage as well as a campus landmark. The record does not give a date for the photograph.
