Few posters of the period name manufacturers as openly as this one, which asks owners to loan their 6 x 30 or 7 x 50 Zeiss or Bausch and Lomb binoculars. In 1941, as the armed forces expanded, optical equipment was in short supply, and privately owned glasses offered a quick source for naval observers and lookouts. The poster was produced under the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration, and it shows how the government turned to civilians for war materials before the United States entered the conflict in December 1941.
