Poughkeepsie sits on the Hudson River, and this view shows the town from an elevated vantage point, as its title, "Drawn from nature by B. Hess," indicates. The print was published and lithographed in Newburgh, a river town across the Hudson, by the firm of Wiltsie & Hess around 1852. Bird's-eye views like this were popular in the 1850s because they let residents and prospective buyers see an entire town at once, with its streets, waterfront, and principal buildings laid out below. Because the sketch was made from life and then printed as a color lithograph, it records the town's appearance at a specific moment in its growth.
