A decorative rendering of the Ten Commandments, framed by a floral border, sits on the Flowers and Trees board for a reason worth noticing: the blossoms and vines were chosen to ornament sacred text rather than to depict a landscape. Religious texts were often written out in elaborate lettering during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when such pieces hung in parlors and schoolrooms as household devotional art. Botanical borders of roses, lilies and leafy scrolls were a common way to soften and beautify the solemn words. Looking closely at the lettering and the flower work together shows how the makers treated script itself as a kind of ornament.
