A color lithograph from 1918, this poster was trimmed to a long banner shape and carries the advertising of United Cigars beneath its patriotic message. Its title, "The spirit still lives," links George Washington to the colonial militiamen known as Minutemen, who turned out at Lexington and Concord in 1775. The pairing made a direct appeal to the American Revolution as a model for the country's effort in World War I, which the United States had joined in 1917. Patriotic images like this one were common on posters and in advertising during the war, when businesses often used them to encourage public support.
