The caption on this glass negative reads "Williams, Central, 23," a label the record marks as unverified, so the exact place and occasion remain open. Dated 1923, it belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, the work of a commercial studio that photographed scenes and people across the United States in the early twentieth century. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947, and its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of the original coatings, which is worth keeping in mind when judging the image.
