A 4-by-5-inch glass negative identifies its subject as Princess Santa Borghese, with a date of March 21, 1923, though that caption information has not been independently verified. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio active in the 1910s and 1920s, photographed government officials, society figures and visitors to the capital. Herbert A. French gave the plate to the Library of Congress in 1947. The faint streaks and blemishes across its surface come from the natural deterioration of the original coating, and they are worth noticing when you view it.
