Taken on January 6, 1921, this glass negative records Bertrand H. Snell, a New York Republican then serving in the House of Representatives, a seat he held for more than two decades. The date falls within the final weeks of the 66th Congress, just before Warren G. Harding's inauguration that March. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio active in the 1910s and 1920s, made many portraits of officials and public figures like this one. Viewers should note the streaks and blemishes across the plate, which result from natural deterioration of the original emulsion coatings.
