Among the portraits in the National Photo Company Collection, this glass negative is distinguished by its sitter, Bertrand H. Snell, a Republican who represented a northern New York district in Congress for many years. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio active in the early twentieth century, recorded political figures and public life in a steady stream of such plates, and this one dates from roughly 1918 to 1921, during Snell's early House career. Because it survives as a glass negative, prints made from it can show streaks and surface blemishes from deterioration of the original coating, which are worth noticing when judging the image's condition.
