This photograph shows the figure of the Santo Niño de Atocha, the child Jesus depicted as a pilgrim with a wide-brimmed hat, a staff, and a basket, often shown with a water gourd. The devotion takes its name from the Atocha shrine in Madrid and is widely venerated across Spain, Mexico, and other parts of Latin America, where small statues like this one were kept in homes, chapels, and parish altars. Its pilgrim imagery and its association with protection and travel made it a familiar religious object in many communities. The caption card does not record a date, so the image is best understood through its subject and the devotional traditions it reflects.
