Thomas Sopwith, the British aviation and yachting pioneer, is the subject of this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Bain News Service, the New York photo agency that produced and sold pictures of notable people in the early twentieth century, supplied the title, though the record notes it is unverified and carries no date. Sopwith is best known for designing and building the Sopwith Camel, one of the most successful fighter aircraft of the First World War, and for his America's Cup challenges in the 1930s. The plate's small format and glass base reflect the everyday working medium of press photographers of that era.
